NXT October 16th Review: A Night of Champions

For the first time I can safely say I'm looking forward to a Bo Dallas match granted that's mainly because he's working with Sami Zayn but it's a key upside to someone who has been lacking such a thing.
Show starts with a promo package highlighting the feud with Bo and Sami for tonight's title match mainly showing Sami pinning Bo as the masked El Local 2 weeks ago.
The Ascension (Conor O'Brian & Rick Victor) (c) vs. Adrian Neville & Corey Graves for the NXT Tag titles: I've mentioned before that changing Neville's music was an awful move it's so generic. Renee Young is on commentary I think she's going to be doing more commentary. Rick and Corey to start, Rick keeps missing punches with Corey getting a couple of shots in and keeps throwing him into the turnbuckle. Corey gets a hanging leg scissors over the ropes, Neville gets the blind tag and springboard dropkick with 2 running elbows. Bodyslam by Neville who jumps to the top rope, Conor runs towards him on the apron but gets kicked away, Neville then jumps over Rick and runs off the rope leading to Conor low bridging the ropes and Neville flying to the outside and he grabs his leg. We go to break and come back to see Conor attacking the leg and tagging Rick, Conor then holds Neville open for a gut shot I guess they must read this and learnt to stop lifting them up for that double team. Tag right back out and Neville gets the boot up and tries to run under and then over Conor who throws Neville out but he gets the tag to a little reaction, Corey nails some elbows and an STO. Corey sets up for the chop block and gets it then locks in Unlucky 13 but Rick makes the save again little reaction. Corey crawls over and tags Neville who is still visibly hurt and reluctant to get in, he does while limping and Conor dropkicks the leg. Rick gets tagged, Rick goes to pick him up but eats a kick. Neville goes for the tag but Rick hits a knee and they collide heads leading to Total Elimination and the 3. They need to name that move and once again this match got little reaction and was probably worse than they're match 2 weeks ago. I don't see any upside to the Ascension even their entrance, which got them attention in the first place, isn't anything special. After Corey comes in and has a go at Neville, who apologises but Corey chop blocks the leg and attacks him, my only problem here is that Corey ran the ropes before the attack why would Neville still stand there he should have just kicked him. This was expected from the start of their team and Corey is probably better served as a heel. Winners and still champs: The Ascension
Promo for Hell in a Cell and Cena's return plays, it's a demonic video but I have 2 problems. 1) why does he have beef with Del Rio and 2) As Jim Cornette put it the return doesn't mean much, “He hasn't been gone long enough for us to miss him”. We come back with the commentators talking about the Graves attack.
Tyler Breeze vs. CJ Parker: Tyler gets a big reaction when he comes out. This feud is dreadful and it has been from the start. CJ gets booed. The 2 argue in the ring and CJ chops him to start then an airplane spin, Tony brings up the finish of their last match where it ended via iPhone shot and Renee brings up the good point of “Are they even dangerous they're tiny now if it was the 80's style phone it would be heavy”. Tyler goes outside and CJ follows, then gets a sunset flip for a 2 coming in and Tyler fights back with a shove to little effect. CJ misses a dropkick and Tyler gets a boot and grabs his phone then endless clubs only stopping when they hit the ropes. CJ pops up and goes for a punch which stops Tyler. CJ gets a cradle for a 2 then a dropping clothesline and Tyler begs off, Tyler then gets a thumb to the eye and a spinning heel kick for the win. A dreadful match and I don't want to see these 2 interact ever again! After Tyler goes for a selfie with CJ but CJ wakes up and uppercuts Tyler to boos, he then grabs the phone and takes photos with the crowd. Winner: Tyler Breeze
Paige & Emma vs. BFFs (Summer Rae & Sasha Banks): Matching gold gear for the BFFs. Paige and Sasha to start with Paige & Emma arguing who will start. Thez press by Paige and head pounds, quick tag out to Rae and Paige stays in control. Emma gets tagged and Rae runs into the corner getting the tag, Banks runs into a drop toe hold and then into the turnbuckle. Emma gets a sunset flip for a 2 then a cradle for another 2 and Banks gets a boot to the gut and Rae gets Emma's attention leading to the heat. I'd like to say at this point that the commentary has been pretty great on the show, Renee & Regal are just busting Tony's balls and making jokes but are also paying a lot of attention to the work in the ring. Rae gets tagged and a leg choke which is 80% of her offence. Inverted pedigree by Rae for a 2 followed by a laying down surfboard, Emma rolls out and gets a roll up for a 2. Rae keeps stopping the tag until she rolls out of the grip this lasted too long in my view, Paige hits her knee lifts on Rae and Banks grabs her when she attempts to get in the ring but she kicks her off and hits a dropkick for a 2. A Perfectplex by Paige, Tony calls it a snap and Regal corrects him. Emma comes in but gets throw out by Banks who is then thrown out by Paige allowing Rae to hit her Matt Sydal leg drop move for the 3. I don't know where they're going in terms of a title match maybe a Triple threat. This was pretty good match no complaints really. Winners: BFFs
Bo Dallas (c) vs. Sami Zayn for the NXT Championship: Surprisingly no promos from either man on the show before this. “No More Bo” chants from the start then it moves on to “Sami” chants. Bo seems to slip on his own feet to start, Sami grabs an arm ringer and Bo reverses it but Sami quickly gets an arm drag. Chant of “Bo has cooties”, random. Bo gets a cruifix pin and then a roll up and a school boy all for 2 counts. A tie up and headlock by Sami into a hammerlock back to a headlock until Bo escapes and grabs a headlock then hammerlock and strikes from behind. A series of knees to a downed Sami by Bo for a 1 , then more knees for a 1 and another pin. A great bit of story telling of Bo taking advantage of the first real bit of offence he got and not letting Sami up. Bo grabs an kravate and Sami gets gut shots but is cut off. Whip to the corner but Sami runs out with 2 clotheslines and a back body drop, he sets up the running mafia kick and hits it for the 3 but Bo put his foot on the rope leading to JBL coming out and restarting the match saying “This will not happen under his regime” and says “Referee don't make me learn your name”. Bo attacks from behind leading to a break, honestly I don't know if I would have done that false finish especially since Bo had his foot from the beginning of the pin he should have done that at the 2. Another demonic promo for Hell in a Cell plays this time for the WWE title match, sadly this program was killed by bad booking. We come back with Bo having a kravate and then hits a clothesline for a 2 then grabs the kravate back. Bo runs at Sami who low bridges him to the outside and nails a tope con heelo, back in and Sami goes to the top rope and hits a great cross body for a near fall. Sami sets up the kick again but Bo grabs the leg but is nailed with a Blue Thunder bomb for another near fall. “Let's go Sami” chants starts and Sami picks up Bo who gets a kick to the gut and a running side kick then a climb up bulldog for a near fall. Bo hits a reverse DDT for a 2, fans a super into this. Bo whips Sami and misses an armdrag, Sami then gets the boot up and a spear for a really good near fall. Sami sets up his climb up DDT but Bo escapes and crotches Sami on the ropes, Bo hits the spear but Sami kicks out to a huge pop. “This is awesome” chants, both struggle up and Bo hits a forearm he puts Sami on the top rope and attempts a superplex but Sami fights back and hits a sunset bomb for a real near fall. A German suplex by Sami who hangs on during which the turnbuckle pad on the low right corners top rope comes off, they head towards that corner but Sami gets another suplex, the ref removes the pad allowing Bo to throw him into the exposed buckle and school boys for the win. Easily Bo's best match I've seen and I just hope they do a rematch with Sami winning but a rematch in general would be good. This was a great match and they had the false finish to keep Sami as a title contender and Bo looked like the desperate heel by winning like that. Winner & still champion: Bo Dallas
The main event was a great example of what can happen when you put your top babyface (who is actually getting the reaction of a top babyface) against your top heel, the fans were invested from the very beginning until the very end and it only added to the match which to be far was a fantastic match regardless. Outside of the main event this wasn't a great show, we got some story progression for some feuds but the in ring stuff was just lacking and the fans reaction was with it, it was a pretty quiet crowd for the most part but an upside was the commentary this was one of the first weeks I really paid attention to them usually it's just background noise to me. So basically what I'm saying is listen to the show don't watch it.
